Having taken it’s rightful place as one of the top story lines in the history of the comic at the time,  the hugely successful “Days of Future Past” had created more than it’s share of popular mutants which it’s creator, Chris Claremont, could choose from to round out his team of X-Men.  The year was 1984.  Kitty Pryde has taken a leave of absence.  Cyclops retired and the void created by Jean Grey’s death is an elephant in the danger room.

Rachel Grey as Phoenix in her original costume. She appears showing her profile, back of head and face head on.Rachel Summers, an alternate future daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey possessed by the Dark Phoenix, proved the right choice to Claremont as she joined the X-Men through a convoluted series of events.  Unfortunately, X-Men fans disagreed with Claremont’s choice.  How could the daughter of two of the most popular X-Men be so unpopular? The answer boils down to five simple reasons.* Constant whining over dead mother and cheating father.

  1. * None of the personality that her popular parent’s showed years before.
  2. Truly awful costume designs that included a weird red spiked S&M outfit, multi-colored leotards and an eyesore of a dark phoenix re-design. Top all of those costumes with a rat-tail haircut and you have one of the worst character designs in all of X-history.
  3. Hailing from an alternate future, which virtually killed any chance the fans had to relate to her. A close friend said he stopped buying X-men Essentials after the Dark Phoenix Saga because he didn’t want to read about alternate futures and convoluted stories. ‘Nuff said.
  4. All of her dialogue (not most, all) was either about:
    1. being from a distopian future
    2. hating the fact that her mom was dead or
    3. hating the fact that she came from a dystopian future where her mom was dead.
