This issue certainly does not start off rather slow, but picks up rather swiftly. The main plot deals with Emma Frost who has been in her diamond form since the Dark Reign crossover event. Much to the fan boy’s chagrin, she has been unable to remove her diamond shield for fear of a sliver of The Sentry’s “the void” imbedded in her head. Many fans have been begging for its removal as we all miss her lovely snarky comments. Charles Xavier and Scott Summers aim to remove the void from Emma’s mind by creating a mental link between the two, therefore allowing Scott to enter Emma’s mind to fend off this telepathic fiend. The sub plot deals with Magneto attempting to find his place on the island, since his initial use of his newly found powers went rather sour. So the X-men’s since team decides to ask Magneto for his assistance in keeping the asteroid afloat. The readers will come to realize that while Cyclops has done a great job in gathering all mutants, he did so too quickly. As a result it turns out Asteroid M is actually sinking back into the watery depths from which she came, quite the conundrum.
I have to admit Matt Fraction is finally coming into his own with these characters. It seems as if he has gotten stronger with each of the last few months worth of issues and I for one am thrilled. With the Dodson’s and Greg Land doing the pencil duties, they are beginning to make this run on Uncanny their very own. With each installment it has gotten better and this is no different. The most interesting thing here is how they’ve decided to manifest the Void inside of Emma Frost’s mind. It appears as multiple Emma Frosts in Diamond form while the Emma we all know and love is helpless to defend Scott as he is viciously attacked by a thousand different Emma Frosts. (Which in and of itself is a fan boy’s paradise I would absolutely pick up issue 518 if you haven’t yet. It’s another great addition to Matt Fraction’s stint on the title.
