House of M Review

Written by  Anthony Pelissier

Pietro and Wanda Maximoff on the cover of House of M #7 What would the world be like if everyone got to live the life they really wanted?  That's what "House of M" explores as we see the most famous of the Marvel Universe living the life that they truly want.  Wanda Maximoff, arguably the most powerful mutant in the world, has the ability to change reality with just a blink of the eye.  After accidentally killing some of her Avengers team mates, Wanda has an even harder time controlling her unbelievable powers.  The Avengers and X-Men have a difficult choice to make, do they let Wanda live and possibly have her destroy the world or do they kill her and save the world from possible destruction.  This moral choice that they face is the basis for the story and helps shine light on certain characters and their personalities.

"House of M" offers some of the best character writing you will see in a Marvel comic.  Right from the beginning we are thrust into a difficult choice.  Do we allow ourself to get caught up in the mayhem and want to kill Wanda, like Wolverine and Emma Frost, or do we go the humane route like Spider Man and Captain America and try to help her find herself again.  It's a disgusting choice to have to make as a reader, but everyone who reads will find themselves siding with one faction.  Even after all that, the best writing is still that of Wanda Maximoff.  Bendis does a great job of making you understand where Wanda is coming from and why she is on the verge of destroying the world.  Her father is a tyrant and never afforded her any time while she was growing up and this is clearly shown in Bendis' writing.  Wanda's constant "imagining" of her giving birth and playing with her children shows her need to have children and raise them right.  To give her children a "normal" childhood that she was never given.

"House of M" is considered to be one of the most important Marvel storylines in recent history and for good reason.  This storyline completely shakes up the Marvel Universe and will have an impact for years to come.  This earth shattering event should be read by all Marvel fans.  If you're wondering why the X-Men are grieving over every mutant death or why Hope was worth going to war over in "Messiah War" than this is the storyline you need to read!

House of M #7 is one of my favorite comics ever. It explored a facet of what it's like to be a mutant that hasn't been explored before or since. Wanda's meltdown is particularly written well and it's nice to be brought back to when I first read it from this review. :)
